The Nightmare Before Christmas director is the hardest, because a studio spent money making it so. The Grinch narrator question is next. Boris Karloff narrated the 1966 special and voiced the Grinch, but he did not sing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". That was Thurl Ravenscroft, left out of the closing credits, which is why the song is still handed to Karloff sixty years on.
The ghost count catches anyone answering three out of habit — three spirits, four ghosts.
For a tiebreak, use the song the Whos sing at the end of the Grinch: "Welcome Christmas". Almost nobody guesses it cold, but anyone who has watched the special can get there, so it does not feel unfair. Leave the Nightmare question in the main round, where everyone can get it wrong together.
The stories behind the answers
It's a Wonderful Life was not born a classic. It cost about $3.18 million, took roughly $3.3 million against a break-even of $6.3 million, and RKO booked a loss of $525,000 — though it was hardly ignored, taking five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The award it did win that year was technical: Russell Shearman and RKO's effects department were honoured for a new way of making falling snow. Film snow before that was largely untoasted cornflakes, loud enough underfoot that dialogue had to be dubbed back in.
What made it an institution was an administrative accident. A clerical error left the copyright unrenewed in 1974, so American stations could screen it almost free, and did, every December. Republic Pictures reasserted control in 1993 using the 1990 Supreme Court ruling in Stewart v. Abend: the film derives from Philip Van Doren Stern's story "The Greatest Gift", whose copyright had been renewed.
Miracle on 34th Street arrived sideways too. Fox opened it in the early summer of 1947 and kept the Christmas setting out of the posters and trailers, on the reasoning that more people went to the cinema in warm weather. It won three Oscars regardless, including Best Supporting Actor for Edmund Gwenn, and the parade footage is the real 1946 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, shot live as it happened.
A Christmas Story came from Jean Shepherd's 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, opened a week before Thanksgiving in 1983, took just over $19.2 million and was gone by Christmas. The twenty-four-hour marathon that made it unavoidable did not begin until 1997, on TNT, moving to TBS in 2004. Rudolph is older paperwork still: Robert L. May wrote him for Montgomery Ward in 1939 as a giveaway booklet, and the store handed out 2.4 million copies in the first year. Gene Autry's recording of Johnny Marks's song was number one the week of Christmas 1949.
Two more for the animated round. The 1964 Rudolph special was animated in Tokyo in Rankin/Bass's Animagic stop motion under Tadahito Mochinaga, and the ending everyone remembers was not in the first broadcast: Santa never went back for the Misfit Toys. Viewers wrote in, the scene was made, and it was added for the 1965 repeat. The Muppet Christmas Carol lost a song before release — "When Love Is Gone" was cut on the view that it would not hold younger viewers. It survived on early home video, but the film itself did not carry it again in restored form until December 2022, when Disney archivists found the original negative and a 30th-anniversary version went up on Disney+.
Five Christmas movie facts that get repeated every year and are wrong
Coca-Cola did not invent the red Santa suit. The claim fails on dates: a red-and-white Santa in essentially his modern form was on Puck magazine covers in the first years of the twentieth century, and White Rock Beverages was using Santa in adverts from 1915 and in colour by 1923-25. Sundblom's Coca-Cola paintings began in 1931 and spread an image that already existed.
Ralphie's Red Ryder never had a compass in the stock. The real Daisy Red Ryder had neither compass nor sundial — those belonged to the company's Buck Jones model, and Shepherd appears to have merged the two guns in memory. The prop in the film does carry them, mounted on the opposite side of the stock because Peter Billingsley was left-handed.
Boris Karloff did not sing, as above, and the story that CBS nearly refused to air A Charlie Brown Christmas deserves the same scepticism: it comes almost entirely from producer Lee Mendelson's recollections years afterwards, not from any contemporary record. What is documented is the outcome: CBS, 9 December 1965, roughly 45 per cent of the viewing audience, second that night behind Bonanza, an Emmy and a Peabody.
Gremlins was not rated PG-13, though it is half the reason the rating exists. It went out as PG in 1984, as did Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and complaints about the two of them led Steven Spielberg to press the MPAA to revise its system, which it did within two months of Gremlins opening.
The last one is not a film fact, but it attaches itself to It's a Wonderful Life every year: suicides do not peak at Christmas. CDC figures, tracked annually by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, put December at the lowest average daily rate of the twelve months, with the highest in August and May. Researchers keep asking news outlets to stop repeating the opposite, because implying this is the season for it can do harm.
How to host a Christmas movie trivia night
Forty questions in four rounds runs about 45 minutes if you keep it moving, closer to 70 once people are allowed to argue. Read the question, take answers, read the answer and its line of context, move on.
Teams of three to five beat individuals, because a losing team still has someone to blame. Under eight people, play in pairs. Over twenty, use teams of five and have each write its answers down — shouted answers stop working somewhere around a dozen voices, and the fastest talker starts winning games they should not.
Score one point a question and refuse half points. Ten a round and forty in total means ties are common, which is why you held a question back. House rule worth stealing: a bonus point for any team that gets the Nightmare Before Christmas director right. Print the page for yourself and give the teams blank paper.
When time is short, do not drop a round — take the first five questions of each instead, which halves the length and keeps all four flavours.
