2nd Grade Trivia — 40 Questions & Answers

Second graders are at the age where a quiz stops being scary and starts being a game they want to win. That only works if the questions are pitched right: too easy and they lose interest in a minute, too hard and one wrong answer ends the round. These 40 original questions are written for seven- and eight-year-olds — adding and subtracting within a hundred, coins and clocks, animal life cycles and weather, the first real map skills, and the parts of speech second grade actually names. Four rounds of ten, each matched to a subject block, so a teacher can pull one out as a five-minute filler and a parent can run the whole set at the kitchen table. Every answer has a short fact underneath that gives a child something to repeat to somebody else, which is the surest sign it stuck. Read the list below or play the free quiz on this page.

Math trivia for 2nd graders — adding, subtracting, money, and time

Second-grade math is mostly about getting fast and confident inside a hundred, plus the two real-world skills that show up every day: reading a clock and counting money. Nothing here needs paper — these are meant to be answered out loud.

  1. Q1.What is 9 plus 6?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 15

A useful trick: turn the 9 into 10 by borrowing one from the 6, then add 10 plus 5.

  2. Q2.What is 20 minus 8?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 12

Counting back from 20 works, but counting up from 8 to 20 is faster and gives the same answer.

  3. Q3.How many cents are in a quarter?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 25 cents

Four quarters make a dollar, which is why a quarter is called a quarter.

  4. Q4.How many minutes are in an hour?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 60

The number 60 comes from ancient Babylon, where people counted in sixties instead of tens.

  5. Q5.What number comes next: 10, 20, 30, 40?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 50

Counting by tens is skip counting, and it is the first step toward multiplication.

  6. Q6.How many sides does a triangle have?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Three

Tri means three, which is also why a tricycle has three wheels.

  7. Q7.Is 7 an even number or an odd number?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Odd

Even numbers can be split into two equal groups. Seven always leaves one left over.

  8. Q8.What is half of 10?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 5

Half means splitting into two equal parts, so 5 plus 5 gets you back to 10.

  9. Q9.How many days are in a week?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Seven

The seven-day week is thousands of years old and does not match the length of a month or a year.

  10. Q10.In the number 46, which digit is in the tens place?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The 4

The 4 stands for four tens, which is forty. Place value is why 46 and 64 are different numbers.

Animal and nature trivia for second grade

Animals are the easiest subject to get a second grader talking, and life cycles and habitats are on the syllabus anyway. Expect loud confidence on the butterfly question and a real argument about whether a penguin counts as a bird.

  1. Q1.What does a caterpillar turn into?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A butterfly

The change happens inside a chrysalis and is called metamorphosis.

  2. Q2.Is a penguin a bird?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Yes

Penguins have feathers and lay eggs, which makes them birds. They swim instead of flying.

  3. Q3.What do bees make?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Honey

A single worker bee makes about one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its whole life.

  4. Q4.How many legs does an insect have?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Six

Spiders have eight, which is why a spider is not an insect.

  5. Q5.What is a baby cat called?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A kitten

A baby dog is a puppy, a baby sheep is a lamb, and a baby goat is a kid.

  6. Q6.Do fish breathe with lungs or gills?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Gills

Gills pull oxygen out of the water. Whales and dolphins have lungs and must come up for air.

  7. Q7.What is the biggest animal in the ocean?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The blue whale

A blue whale can grow longer than two school buses parked end to end.

  8. Q8.What do we call an animal that is awake at night and sleeps in the day?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Nocturnal

Owls, bats and raccoons are nocturnal. Animals awake in the day are diurnal.

  9. Q9.What part of a plant takes in water from the soil?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The roots

Roots also hold the plant in place, which is why a tree can stand up to a storm.

  10. Q10.Where do polar bears live: the North Pole or the South Pole?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The North Pole

Penguins live near the South Pole, so the two never meet in the wild.

Weather, seasons, and the world around us

Second grade is when weather stops being just something outside and starts having names and causes. This round mixes weather with the first map ideas — continents, oceans, and the difference between a state and a country.

  1. Q1.How many seasons are there in a year?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Four

Spring, summer, fall and winter. They happen because the Earth is tilted as it goes around the Sun.

  2. Q2.What do we call frozen rain that falls as soft white flakes?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Snow

Every snowflake has six sides, because of the way water molecules lock together as they freeze.

  3. Q3.What tool do we use to measure temperature?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A thermometer

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 0 degrees Celsius.

  4. Q4.What appears in the sky after rain when the sun comes out?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A rainbow

Sunlight bends inside raindrops and splits into colors. You can only see one with the sun behind you.

  5. Q5.How many continents are there on Earth?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Seven

Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

  6. Q6.What covers most of the Earth's surface: land or water?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Water

About seventy percent of the planet is ocean, which is why Earth looks blue from space.

  7. Q7.What do we call a very big storm with strong spinning winds over the ocean?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A hurricane

A spinning storm over land is a tornado, and it is much smaller but faster.

  8. Q8.Which season comes right after summer?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Fall, also called autumn

Leaves change color in fall because trees stop making the green chemical that feeds them.

  9. Q9.Is the Sun a star or a planet?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A star

It only looks bigger than other stars because it is far closer to us.

  10. Q10.What do we call the imaginary line around the middle of the Earth?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The equator

Places near the equator are warm all year because sunlight hits them most directly.

Reading and word trivia for 2nd grade

By second grade, most children can read a sentence without sounding it out, so the questions move to what words do. Nouns and verbs get named, rhyme becomes a tool rather than an accident, and the alphabet turns into something you can count and sort.

  1. Q1.How many letters are in the English alphabet?Tap to reveal

    Answer: 26

Five of them are vowels: a, e, i, o and u. The letter y sometimes joins in.

  2. Q2.What kind of word is a naming word, like dog or school?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A noun

Nouns name people, places, animals and things. Verbs are the doing words.

  3. Q3.What kind of word is jump?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A verb

Verbs are action words. Every complete sentence needs one.

  4. Q4.What word rhymes with cat: hat or cup?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Hat

Words rhyme when they end with the same sound, not when they start with the same letter.

  5. Q5.What mark goes at the end of a telling sentence?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A period

A question gets a question mark, and a shout gets an exclamation mark.

  6. Q6.What is the opposite of hot?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Cold

Words with opposite meanings are called antonyms.

  7. Q7.Which letter is a vowel: b or e?Tap to reveal

    Answer: e

Almost every word in English has at least one vowel in it.

  8. Q8.What do we call the person who writes a book?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The author

The person who draws the pictures in a picture book is called the illustrator.

  9. Q9.What is the first letter of the alphabet?Tap to reveal

The word alphabet comes from alpha and beta, the first two letters in Greek.

  10. Q10.In a story, what do we call where and when it happens?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The setting

The people in the story are the characters, and what happens to them is the plot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these 2nd grade trivia questions right for a 7 or 8 year old?

Yes. They sit at second-grade level in most US curricula: adding and subtracting within a hundred, coins and clocks, life cycles and habitats, the seven continents, and nouns, verbs and rhyme. A confident first grader will handle the animal and weather rounds, and a third grader will still be caught out by the place value question.

How long does a trivia round take with second graders?

One round of ten questions takes about eight minutes if you read the fact after each answer, which is worth doing. Attention at this age holds for one or two rounds, so stop while they are still asking for more rather than pushing through all four.

Can I use these questions in a second grade classroom?

Yes, freely — for morning warm-ups, brain breaks, indoor recess and substitute days. Each round covers one subject block, so you can run the math set on its own without touching the rest of the page.

How do I keep a whole class of second graders involved?

Use teams of two or three rather than individuals, so no child is alone with a wrong answer, and let teams confer out loud before answering. Give around twenty seconds a question at this age, and rotate who speaks for the team so the same confident child does not answer every time.

Where can second graders play trivia online?

This page has a free quiz widget with no signup and no download: ten multiple-choice questions that work on a phone, a tablet or a classroom projector. Trivio.NET's Animals and Science topic quizzes are the next step for a child who wants to keep going.
