Movie Trivia for Kids - 65 Questions & Answers

Movie trivia for kids works best when the films are ones a child has actually watched twice. That is why almost everything below comes from Disney, Pixar and family animation - the corner of cinema that gets replayed until every line is memorised - running from the 1937 classics through to the films on repeat this year. The 65 questions run in six rounds: sidekicks and best friends first, because a five-year-old can win that round outright, then naming a film from a handful of its characters, then a round of villains, then magic and happy endings, then a round of famous lines where you read the quote and the room shouts the title, and a last round on the newer films that most children will find easier than the first one. Every question has a short answer and a note explaining why the answer is what it is, so after each reveal you have something to read back instead of moving straight on - and the notes are where the adults in the room learn something too. Nothing here needs a screen, a picture or a sound clip. You can host the whole quiz out loud from a phone at a birthday party, in a classroom, or in the back of a car.

Round 1: easy movie trivia for kids - sidekicks and best friends

Start here whatever the age of the room. Every answer is a character rather than a date, a director or a plot point, and the questions are about who belongs to whom.

If you are quizzing very young children, this round alone is a complete game. Read the note after each answer - a one-line fact turns a list of questions into something the room talks about.

  1. Q1.Who is Ariel's fish best friend in The Little Mermaid?Tap to reveal

  7. Q7.Which of the Seven Dwarfs never speaks in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?Tap to reveal

Round 2: name the Disney movie from its characters

This is the round that separates the child who has seen a film once from the child who has worn out the disc. You read three or four names, the room shouts the title.

It also works in reverse for younger players: say the film first and ask them to name one more character from it. Same list, half the difficulty.

  1. Q1.Which Disney movie has characters named Drizella, Anastasia and Lucifer?Tap to reveal

Li Shang is the captain who trains the unit Mulan joins in her father's place. His speaking voice is BD Wong and his singing voice is Donny Osmond.

Round 3: Disney villain trivia for kids

Villains are the round children answer fastest, because a good villain is the part of a film they remember best. Every answer here is a name rather than a plot point, so it stays fair for younger players.

Read the notes in this round even if the room gets every answer. They are full of the sort of detail - the same actress voicing two villains, an octopus with the wrong number of legs - that makes a child want to watch the film again.

  1. Q1.In The Lion King, what is the name of the villain who was Simba's uncle?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Scar

Scar is voiced by Jeremy Irons. The cruellest thing he does is not killing his brother but convincing the cub that the death was his own fault, which is what drives Simba away.

  2. Q2.Who is the main villainess in Disney's The Little Mermaid?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Ursula

Ursula is drawn as half octopus but has six tentacles rather than eight. Two short of a real octopus, and nobody notices until it is pointed out - which is the fun of asking.

  3. Q3.In Disney's Aladdin, what is the name of the evil sorcerer and Grand Vizier?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Jafar

Jafar wants the lamp so he can rule Agrabah, and his last wish is what defeats him: he asks to become an all-powerful genie, forgetting that genies are bound to their lamps.

  4. Q4.What is the name of the arrogant villain who is determined to marry Belle in Beauty and the Beast?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Gaston

Gaston has no magic, no curse and no army. His weapon is the crowd he can whip up in a few minutes, which is what makes the mob scene the genuinely frightening part of the film.

  5. Q5.What is the name of the primary villain in Disney's Pocahontas?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Governor Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe is certain the new land is stuffed with gold and digs it up looking for it. A real John Ratcliffe was one of the leaders of the Jamestown colony, though the film's version of him is invented.

  6. Q6.What is the name of the main villain in Disney's version of Robin Hood?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Prince John

Disney's 1973 Robin Hood casts every part as an animal: Robin is a fox, Little John a bear, and Prince John a thumb-sucking lion who cries for his mother whenever he loses.

  7. Q7.Who is the pirate villain in Peter Pan?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Captain Hook

Hans Conried voiced both Captain Hook and Mr Darling, the children's father. That double casting is a tradition carried over from the stage, where the same actor has played both parts since Barrie's day.

  8. Q8.What is the name of the evil dark fairy in Sleeping Beauty?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Maleficent

She curses the baby Aurora out of spite at not being invited to the christening, and turns into a dragon for the final fight. The 2014 live-action film Maleficent retells the same story from her point of view.

  9. Q9.Who is the villain in Disney's Cinderella?Tap to reveal

Answer: Lady Tremaine, the wicked stepmother

The film mostly just calls her the stepmother. Eleanor Audley voiced both Lady Tremaine and Maleficent, which is why the two of them sound so alike.

  10. Q10.Pain and Panic are the bumbling henchmen of which Disney villain?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Hades

Hades sends the pair to get rid of the baby Hercules. They botch the job, which is why he keeps his god-like strength. James Woods voiced Hades and improvised so freely that the animators drew to his recordings.

Round 4: magic, true love and happy endings

Fairy godmothers, genies, talking trees and the people the heroes end up with. This round is where the classic fairy-tale films live, so it plays well with children who know the princess stories better than the Pixar ones.

The second half is all names of sweethearts. If you want a shorter game, run the six magic questions as a round on their own and save the rest.

  1. Q1.Name the magical character who lives in the lamp in Disney's Aladdin.Tap to reveal

    Answer: The Genie

Robin Williams improvised so much material in the recording booth that the animators built the Genie's lightning-fast shape changes around whatever he happened to say.

  2. Q2.What is the name of the mystical tree in the Disney movie Pocahontas?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Grandmother Willow

Grandmother Willow is a talking willow voiced by Linda Hunt, and she is the one who tells Pocahontas to listen with her heart rather than her head.

  3. Q3.Name the magical character who helps Cinderella get to the ball.Tap to reveal

    Answer: The Fairy Godmother

She turns a pumpkin into a coach and the mice into horses, and sets the spell to break at midnight. That deadline is what gives the whole second half of the film its tension.

  4. Q4.There were three good fairies in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Name one of them.Tap to reveal

    Answer: Flora, Fauna or Merryweather

Merryweather is the one who saves Aurora. She cannot undo another fairy's curse, so she changes it instead: death becomes a sleep that true love's kiss can end.

  5. Q5.Name the wizard in the Disney film The Sword in the Stone.Tap to reveal

    Answer: Merlin

The 1963 film turns the King Arthur legend into a story about school. Merlin teaches the boy by turning him into a fish, a squirrel and a bird, with a grumpy talking owl called Archimedes looking on.

  6. Q6.Who changed Pinocchio from a wooden puppet into a real boy?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The Blue Fairy

She gives the puppet life at the start and makes him a real boy once he has proved himself brave and honest. The film's opening song, When You Wish Upon a Star, won the Academy Award for best original song and became the studio's signature tune.

  7. Q7.With whom does Ariel fall in love in The Little Mermaid?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Prince Eric

Ariel trades her voice for legs to reach him, which means she has to win him over in three days without being able to say a single word.

  8. Q8.Who is Aladdin's beloved?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Princess Jasmine

Jasmine's whole argument in the film is that she refuses to be married off to a prince she has never met, which is exactly what the law her father keeps quoting demands.

  9. Q9.Who does Cinderella fall in love with at the royal ball?Tap to reveal

Answer: The Prince, usually called Prince Charming

The 1950 film never actually gives him a name. The credits list him simply as The Prince, and Prince Charming came from the way other characters and later merchandise described him.

  10. Q10.Who is Robin Hood in love with in Disney's version of the legend?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Maid Marian

In Disney's telling Marian is a vixen and Robin a fox, they were childhood sweethearts, and the film closes with their wedding.

  11. Q11.What is the name of the prince whose kiss wakes Aurora in Sleeping Beauty?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Prince Phillip

Disney spells it Phillip, with two Ls. He and Aurora were promised to each other as babies, then meet by chance in the forest years later with neither one knowing who the other is.

  12. Q12.In Disney's Pocahontas, who is the love interest of the heroine?Tap to reveal

    Answer: John Smith

John Smith is voiced by Mel Gibson. The romance is Disney's invention: the real Pocahontas was a child when the English settlers arrived at Jamestown.

  13. Q13.In The Lion King, what is the name of the lioness Simba loves?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Nala

Nala is his childhood playmate, and she is the one who tracks him down years later and tells him what his uncle has done to the Pride Lands.

Round 5: movie quotes for kids - name the film

The hardest round, and the loudest. Read the line out with as much of the voice as you can manage and let the room shout the title. Children who cannot place a quote from a film they have seen will often get it from the character's voice alone.

This round reaches past the fairy tales into Pixar and one live-action classic, so it is the round where the parents finally get to win something.

  1. Q1.Which Disney movie contains the line: "Fine conscience I turned out to be"?Tap to reveal

Buzz Lightyear says it after being dressed up and sat at a little girl's tea party. Toy Story (1995) was the first feature film animated entirely on computers.

Round 6: newer films - the ones on repeat right now

Everything above this point is a film the adults in the room grew up with. This round is the one the children will win, because it covers the films that have been on in their house this year rather than in 1995.

If the room is all under ten, start here instead of with Round 1 and work backwards. The questions are the same shape - a name, a creature, a family - so nothing gets harder, only older.

  1. Q1.In Frozen, what is the name of Elsa and Anna's snowman?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Olaf

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are these movie trivia questions for?

Round 1 is answerable by a five-year-old who has seen the films, and so is Round 6, which covers the newest ones. Rounds 2 to 4 suit roughly ages seven and up. Round 5 asks you to recognise a film from a line of dialogue, which usually needs an older child or a parent on the team.

How many movie trivia questions do I need for a kids' party?

Twenty to thirty is plenty for children. Run two of the rounds below with a scoring break between them, and stop while they still want more rather than working through all of them.

Which films do these questions cover?

Mostly Disney and Pixar animation, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 through to Frozen, Moana and Encanto, plus Mary Poppins. They are the family films most likely to have been watched more than once in the same house.

How do I make a movie quiz work for a mixed group of ages?

Put a child and an adult on every team, and alternate rounds instead of going strictly easiest to hardest. Children own the sidekicks and villains rounds; adults own the quotes round.

Can I use these movie trivia questions for free?

Yes. Read them out at a party, in a classroom or on a car journey. Trivio.NET also has a much larger bank of movie and cartoon quizzes if you want to build your own rounds.
