This South America capitals quiz highlights each of the continent's 12 countries on an interactive map and asks you to pick its capital from four options — a quick game that hides two of the most famous trick answers in geography. First trap: Brazil. The capital is not Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo but Brasilia, a city purpose-built in the 1950s to move government inland. Second trap: Bolivia, whose constitutional capital is Sucre even though La Paz hosts the government — this quiz uses Sucre, the standard test answer. The rest of the round rewards clean recall: Bogota for Colombia, Caracas for Venezuela, Quito for Ecuador, Lima for Peru, Santiago for Chile, Buenos Aires for Argentina, Montevideo for Uruguay, and Asuncion for Paraguay. The northern trio finishes things off — Georgetown (Guyana) and Paramaribo (Suriname) are the capitals almost nobody gets on the first run. With only 12 questions the quiz takes about two minutes, wrong answers reveal the correct capital immediately, and seeing each country highlighted on the map locks the pair into memory far better than a flat list.

How to play

  1. The map highlights one country at a time in blue.
  2. Pick its capital city from the four options below the map — correct answers turn green, wrong ones reveal the right capital instantly.
  3. Answer all 12 to see your final score, then replay in a new shuffled order.

S. America Capitals map quiz — FAQ

What are the capitals of the 12 South American countries?
Buenos Aires (Argentina), Sucre (Bolivia), Brasilia (Brazil), Santiago (Chile), Bogota (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Georgetown (Guyana), Asuncion (Paraguay), Lima (Peru), Paramaribo (Suriname), Montevideo (Uruguay), and Caracas (Venezuela).
Why is Brasilia the capital of Brazil instead of Rio?
Brazil built Brasilia from scratch and moved the capital there from Rio de Janeiro in 1960 to develop the country's interior. It is the most missed answer in South American capitals quizzes.
Which South American capitals do players miss most?
Georgetown (Guyana) and Paramaribo (Suriname) top the list since their countries are already the least-known on the continent, followed by the Brasilia-not-Rio and Sucre-not-La-Paz traps.
