Minecraft Trivia: 61 Questions and Answers, Sorted by Difficulty

Most Minecraft trivia lists mix "what colour is a creeper" with "what is a hopper's transfer rate" and put them in one pile, so a mixed room either gets bored or gets humiliated. This set is sorted instead. Seven tiers run from questions any player clears, through mobs, crafting, biomes and structures, into the Nether and the End, and finish on redstone timings and the game's history. Every question carries the answer and a one-line reason, so you can host it cold: read the question, take the answer, then hand the room the detail that makes it stick. Almost nothing here is tied to a particular version, and tier 6 flags the one place where Java and Bedrock part company.

How to use these tiers

Pick a tier that matches your room rather than reading from the top. Tiers 1 and 2 suit a family table or a classroom club. Tiers 3 to 5 are the sweet spot for regular players: they reward building rather than reading. Tiers 6 and 7 are specialist, and the two tiers where one person at the table will be unbeatable.

TierSubjectWho clears it
1First-day basicsAnyone who has played an hour
2Mobs, drops and behaviourSurvival players
3Crafting from memoryPlayers who build without the wiki
4Biomes and structuresExplorers
5The Nether and the EndPlayers who finished the game
6RedstoneEngineers only
7History of the gameReaders, not players

Score one point per question. For a single winner out of a mixed group, run tiers 1, 3 and 5, then use tier 6 as the tiebreak - half of its answers are exact numbers, so there is very little left to argue about.

Tier 1: easy Minecraft trivia questions

Nine questions almost any player answers, which is the point of a first round: get everybody scoring before the rounds that separate them. Read the reason aloud after each answer - half the table knows water and lava make obsidian, far fewer know it only works on a lava source block.

Running this for children? Stop after tier 2 and add a drawing round: give each team a mob name and sixty seconds to draw it. For a slightly older group, our trivia questions for teens page has the same difficulty curve across general topics.

  1. Q1.Which mob sneaks up on you silently and then explodes?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The creeper

It hisses, burns a fuse of about a second and a half, and drops gunpowder when it dies.

  2. Q2.What is the weakest pickaxe that will actually mine obsidian?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A diamond pickaxe

Lower tiers can break the block but drop nothing, so only diamond and netherite yield obsidian.

  3. Q3.What do you feed a wolf to tame it?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Bones

Tamed wolves get a red collar, tilt their heads at you and attack whatever you hit.

  4. Q4.What are the two classic default player skins called?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Steve and Alex

Steve was the only default for years; Alex arrived in 2014 as the second standard option.

  5. Q5.In which two dimensions does a bed explode instead of letting you sleep?Tap to reveal

Answer: The Nether and the End

Neither has a night to skip, so sleeping is blocked - and the refusal was made spectacular rather than silent.

  6. Q6.What do villagers use as currency?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Emeralds

Emerald ore is rarer than diamond underground, but trading makes emeralds the easiest valuable to stockpile.

  7. Q7.How long is a full day-night cycle in real time?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Twenty minutes

Ten minutes of daylight, seven of night, and the rest spent on dawn and dusk.

  8. Q8.Which mob teleports away when you hit it and takes damage from water?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The enderman

Rain alone hurts it, so an enderman caught in a storm teleports constantly looking for shelter.

  9. Q9.What do you get when you pour water onto a lava source block?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Obsidian

Flowing lava turns to cobblestone instead, which is what ruins most first attempts at an obsidian farm.

Tier 2: mobs, drops and behaviour

Mob questions are the best value in a Minecraft quiz, because every answer is something a player has done rather than read. These nine move from drops to behaviour: what a mob gives you matters less than what it does to you.

Two are hard even for a strong table. Almost nobody recites the Wither recipe correctly first time, and the cure for a zombie villager needs two items most players only find pre-packaged in an igloo basement.

  1. Q1.What do you get from a blaze, and what are its two uses?Tap to reveal

Answer: Blaze rods - brewing fuel and eyes of ender

One rod makes two powder: one fuels the brewing stand, the other plus an ender pearl finds the stronghold.

  2. Q2.What do you build an iron golem out of?Tap to reveal

Answer: Four blocks of iron in a T shape, with a carved pumpkin placed last

The pumpkin must go on last, because the structure is only checked when the head block is placed.

  3. Q3.What turns an ordinary creeper into a charged creeper?Tap to reveal

    Answer: A lightning strike

Its blast is roughly twice as strong, and a creeper, skeleton, wither skeleton, zombie or piglin caught in it drops its own head - one head per explosion.

  4. Q4.How do you cure a zombie villager?Tap to reveal

Answer: Weaken it with a potion of Weakness, then feed it a golden apple

The cured villager offers heavily discounted trades - the strongest economy trick in survival.

  5. Q5.Which mob hits you with Mining Fatigue from across the room?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The elder guardian

Three guard every ocean monument, and the effect exists to stop you mining the prismarine out from under them.

  6. Q6.Which mob makes you float helplessly into the air?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The shulker

Its homing projectile applies Levitation, and its shells are the only way to craft a shulker box.

  7. Q7.What makes phantoms start appearing?Tap to reveal

Answer: Not sleeping for three in-game nights

The game tracks insomnia per player, and their membranes are the only material that repairs an elytra on an anvil.

  8. Q8.Which raid mob drops the totem of undying?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The evoker

The robed one that summons fangs and vexes; the totem saves you from a single death if held.

  9. Q9.What summons the Wither?Tap to reveal

Answer: Four soul sand and three wither skeleton skulls

Soul sand - or soul soil, which works just as well - in a T with the skulls on top, and the skulls only drop from wither skeletons in Nether fortresses.

Tier 3: crafting recipes from memory

Here a quiz starts separating people who build from people who watch. Ten recipes, all of them things a long-term player has typed into a crafting grid hundreds of times and still might not recite. Accept near answers on ingredients but insist on exact counts - that is where the points are.

The smelting-fuel question is the sleeper. Everyone guesses coal; the answer is a bucket of lava at a hundred items, which is why large farms get built around a lava source.

  1. Q1.What does an enchanting table cost, and how many bookshelves does it need for the best enchantments?Tap to reveal

Answer: One book, two diamonds and four obsidian - plus fifteen bookshelves

Fifteen shelves one block away is the exact number that unlocks level-30 enchanting; a sixteenth does nothing.

  2. Q2.List everything that goes into a cake.Tap to reveal

Answer: Three buckets of milk, two sugar, one egg and three wheat

The buckets come back empty, and a cake can only be eaten where it is placed.

  3. Q3.What is the recipe for TNT?Tap to reveal

Answer: Five gunpowder and four sand

Alternating across the grid, which is why creeper farms and desert sand pits tend to get built together.

  4. Q4.How much iron does an anvil take?Tap to reveal

Answer: Three blocks of iron and four ingots - thirty-one ingots in total

An anvil also degrades with use and eventually breaks, making it the priciest consumable in survival.

  5. Q5.How do you craft a golden apple, and what about the enchanted one?Tap to reveal

Answer: Eight gold ingots around an apple - the enchanted version cannot be crafted at all

It is loot only, found in places like dungeon, mineshaft and bastion chests.

  6. Q6.What does a beacon cost, and how tall can its pyramid go?Tap to reveal

Answer: A nether star, five glass and three obsidian, on a pyramid of up to four layers

A full four-layer base takes 164 blocks of iron, gold, diamond, emerald or netherite in any mix.

  7. Q7.How do you make one netherite ingot?Tap to reveal

Answer: Four netherite scrap and four gold ingots

Scrap is smelted from ancient debris, and the ingot upgrades diamond gear at a smithing table rather than replacing it.

  8. Q8.What is the smallest number of obsidian blocks that makes a working Nether portal?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Ten

The four corners are decorative - useful to know when you are building the return portal by hand.

  9. Q9.Which single fuel smelts the most items in a furnace?Tap to reveal

Answer: A bucket of lava, at one hundred items

Coal and charcoal manage eight each, a blaze rod twelve, a dried kelp block twenty.

  10. Q10.Which ingredient turns a water bottle into the awkward potion that nearly every brew starts from?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Nether wart

Without it you can only make the few odd potions, weakness among them, that brew straight from water.

Tier 4: biomes, structures and world generation

Eight questions on the world itself. These favour the explorer over the builder, and they are the most satisfying to explain, because almost every structure is a small designed puzzle: the desert pyramid is a trap, the jungle temple a lever riddle, the igloo a tutorial on curing a villager hidden under the floor.

If this is the tier your group enjoys, it travels well into geography rounds - the same instinct for reading a map is what makes our continents and oceans quiz work on the same crowd.

  1. Q1.Which surface biome has no hostile mob spawns at all?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Mushroom fields

The biome is coded to skip hostile spawning, which makes it the safest place to build with no lighting at all; underground, the deep dark skips mob spawning too.

  2. Q2.In which biome does terracotta generate as part of the terrain?Tap to reveal

Answer: The badlands, also called mesa

Those banded layers are natural terracotta; elsewhere it only turns up as a building block in villages, trail ruins and desert pyramids, and badlands mineshafts generate exposed and unusually rich in gold.

  3. Q3.What is hidden under the floor of a desert pyramid?Tap to reveal

Answer: Nine TNT under a stone pressure plate

The plate sits beneath the blue terracotta in the middle of the floor, wired to a 3x3 grid of TNT directly above the four treasure chests it is there to destroy.

  4. Q4.What is in the treasure room at the centre of an ocean monument?Tap to reveal

Answer: Eight blocks of gold, buried in dark prismarine

Sponges are the real prize: dropped by elder guardians and dried out in a furnace.

  5. Q5.What will you find in the basement of an igloo?Tap to reveal

Answer: A zombie villager in a cage, a brewing stand holding a splash potion of Weakness, and a chest with a golden apple

A complete curing kit, deliberately placed: the structure hints at a mechanic the game never explains - though only about half of igloos have the basement at all.

  6. Q6.Which structure holds the End portal, and how many frame blocks does it have?Tap to reveal

Answer: A stronghold, with twelve end portal frames

Some frames generate with their eye already in place, so you rarely need all twelve eyes of ender.

  7. Q7.Where do slimes spawn?Tap to reveal

Answer: In swamps at night, and in randomly chosen "slime chunks" deep underground

Swamp spawning also depends on the moon phase, while slime chunks are fixed by the world seed - so a slime farm goes where the world allows, not where you want it.

  8. Q8.How far from the centre does a Minecraft world actually go?Tap to reveal

Answer: Just under thirty million blocks - 29,999,984, to be exact

That is the world border, an invisible wall; walking there without ever stopping would take about eighty days of real time.

Tier 5: the Nether and the End

Eight questions for players who finished the game rather than played it. The Nether rewards anyone who has used it as a travel shortcut; the End rewards anyone who went back after the dragon, out to the gateway, the outer islands and the ship with the elytra in an item frame.

The dragon egg deserves a mention even though it is not a question here. You get exactly one per world, it sits on the exit portal, and mining it directly teleports it away - which is why every player's first egg is recovered with a piston or a torch trick.

  1. Q1.One block travelled in the Nether equals how many in the Overworld?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Eight

That ratio is why long-distance travel gets built as a Nether tunnel instead of a road on the surface.

  2. Q2.Which mob can you ride across a lava lake, and what steers it?Tap to reveal

Answer: A strider, steered with a warped fungus on a stick

It needs a saddle too, and it is the only mob that walks on lava without burning.

  3. Q3.Which block do you mine to start making netherite gear?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Ancient debris

It never burns, resists explosions and needs a diamond pickaxe, so most players find it by blast mining.

  4. Q4.How can you kill a ghast without firing a shot?Tap to reveal

Answer: Hit its own fireball back at it

A punched or arrow-struck fireball is reflected, and a direct return hit kills a ghast outright.

  5. Q5.How many obsidian pillars stand on the main End island?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Ten

Each carries an end crystal that heals the dragon, and the taller ones are caged in iron bars.

  6. Q6.What does eating a chorus fruit do?Tap to reveal

Answer: Teleports you a short random distance

It is one of the few foods you can eat on a full hunger bar, golden apples being the other one players know, and it will happily teleport you into a wall.

  7. Q7.How do you reach the outer End islands?Tap to reveal

Answer: Throw an ender pearl into an End gateway

Gateways appear only after the dragon dies, and they drop you about a thousand blocks out, near the end cities.

  8. Q8.How do you bring the Ender Dragon back?Tap to reveal

Answer: Place four end crystals around the exit portal

One per side respawns the dragon and the pillars, so the fight and its experience are repeatable.

Tier 6: redstone questions for the engineers

Eight questions for the engineers, half of them with an exact numeric answer, which is what makes this the best tiebreak tier on the page. Redstone behaves like real hardware: signals attenuate, repeaters restore them, and everything is measured in ticks. Somebody at the table will know all eight and nobody will mind.

One warning if your group plays both editions. Redstone timing and the quirk builders call quasi-connectivity differ between Java and Bedrock, so agree in advance which edition you are quizzing on. The numbers below are the standard Java figures.

  1. Q1.How far does a redstone signal travel along dust before it dies?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Fifteen blocks

The signal drops one level per block from a strength of fifteen, so the sixteenth block stays dark.

  2. Q2.What does a repeater do besides restore the signal?Tap to reveal

Answer: Adds a delay of one to four redstone ticks

Right-clicking cycles the delay; a redstone tick is a tenth of a second, so a chain of repeaters is a timer.

  3. Q3.Which single component is a logic inverter - output on when the input is off?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The redstone torch

A torch on a powered block switches off: the NOT gate every other circuit is built from.

  4. Q4.What does an observer detect, and what does it output?Tap to reveal

Answer: A change in the block it faces - and a one-tick pulse from its back

That tiny pulse is why observers are the standard trigger for automatic farms.

  5. Q5.Name the two modes of a comparator.Tap to reveal

    Answer: Compare and subtract

In either mode it also reads how full a container is, which is how item sorters and chest-full alarms work.

  6. Q6.How many blocks can a piston push at once?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Twelve

The thirteenth refuses to move, and some blocks - obsidian, chests, furnaces - cannot be pushed at all.

  7. Q7.How fast does a hopper move items?Tap to reveal

Answer: One item every eight game ticks, so 2.5 items per second

That rate is the bottleneck in nearly every sorting system, which is why big builds run hoppers in parallel.

  8. Q8.What decides which instrument a note block plays?Tap to reveal

    Answer: The block underneath it

Wood gives bass, sand a snare, stone a bass drum and gold a bell; the pitch is separate, set by right-clicking through twenty-five notes.

Tier 7: the history of Minecraft

Nine questions that reward reading rather than playing, which makes this the tier where a parent beats a child. The story is unusually well documented: a Swedish developer posting builds to a forum in 2009, a paid alpha that funded a studio, a full release announced on a stage in Las Vegas two years later.

Save the creeper question for last. It is the most famous accident in game design - a mob that exists because a model came out of the editor with its dimensions swapped, and then became the face of the game. If your room enjoys origin stories, the same energy runs through our video game trivia set.

  1. Q1.Who created Minecraft?Tap to reveal

Answer: Markus Persson, known as Notch

A Swedish developer working on it alongside a day job when the first public version went out in 2009.

  2. Q2.What was the game called before it was called Minecraft?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Cave Game

The working title described exactly what it was then: a cave to dig in, with very little else.

  3. Q3.Which obscure 2009 indie game inspired the digging-and-building core?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Infiniminer

Notch has credited it repeatedly, along with Dwarf Fortress for depth and Dungeon Keeper for mood.

  4. Q4.When did Minecraft leave beta for version 1.0, and where was it announced?Tap to reveal

Answer: November 2011, on stage at MineCon in Las Vegas

It had already sold millions in paid alpha and beta, which was still an unusual way to fund a game.

  5. Q5.Who took over as lead developer after Notch stepped back?Tap to reveal

Answer: Jens Bergensten, known as Jeb

He was already doing much of the design work and has led the game far longer than its creator did.

  6. Q6.Who composed the original soundtrack, and under what name?Tap to reveal

    Answer: Daniel Rosenfeld, as C418

The album Minecraft - Volume Alpha is as recognisable as the game, and most of it is quiet piano.

  7. Q7.Which company bought Mojang, and roughly what did it pay?Tap to reveal

Answer: Microsoft, for about 2.5 billion dollars

The 2014 deal is why there are two editions: the original Java one and the cross-platform Bedrock one.

  8. Q8.How did the creeper come to exist?Tap to reveal

Answer: As a mistake while modelling a pig - the length and height values were swapped

The tall, thin, wrong-looking result was kept, given an explosion, and became the game's mascot.

  9. Q9.Who is Herobrine, and what is the joke in the patch notes?Tap to reveal

Answer: A fictional character who has never been in the game - and "Removed Herobrine" appeared in update notes as a running gag

The legend began as a forum hoax in 2010, and the developers played along without ever adding him.

Hosting a Minecraft trivia night

Seed the teams rather than letting people pick. Minecraft knowledge splits oddly: a twelve-year-old who has never read the wiki clears tiers 2 and 4 and loses tier 7 badly, while an adult who read about the game's development gets the history and nothing else. One of each per team makes a better evening than two of either.

Say the edition out loud before the first question. Announce too whether near answers on ingredient lists count: "iron and flint" for flint and steel is fine, "three iron blocks and some ingots" for an anvil is not.

Two rounds need no questions at all if you have a screen. Show a block texture zoomed in and have teams name it, or play a mob sound and have them name the mob. Both beat a written round with a young group, and both buy you five minutes to total the scores. More formats are in our trivia night ideas guide. Trivio.NET also runs video game trivia head-to-head instead of one person reading aloud, and it is free to play in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Minecraft trivia questions for kids?

Use tiers 1 and 2 only - first-day basics and mobs. Children who play a lot know mob behaviour and drops far better than most adults, so tier 2 is often the round where they win. Skip tiers 6 and 7, which reward reading rather than playing.

How many questions do I need for a Minecraft trivia night?

About forty for a full evening, as four rounds of ten with a break. Reading a question, taking answers and explaining the reason takes roughly a minute. Keep tier 6 in reserve as a tiebreak, because half of its answers are exact numbers.

Do these questions work for Bedrock players as well as Java?

Nearly all of them. Recipes, mob drops, structure contents and the Nether and End questions are the same on both. The differences cluster in tier 6 - redstone timing, piston quirks, farm behaviour - so treat those figures as the Java ones.

Will these questions go out of date after an update?

They are chosen not to. Recipes, mob behaviour, dimension mechanics, redstone numbers and the game's history have all been stable for years. We left out anything tied to a particular version or a recent addition, because those are the questions that turn wrong six months after you print them.

Can I use this for a school or library club?

Yes, and the tiers are why it works there: hand different tiers to different age groups and run them on one scoreboard. Tiers 3 and 4 double as an exercise in reading instructions, since every crafting answer is a recipe with exact quantities.

Where can I play Minecraft-style trivia against other people?

Trivio.NET runs video game trivia rounds head-to-head, so instead of one person reading aloud everyone answers against a timer. It is free to play, and its video game category covers the wider ground this page sits in.
